NATIVE SKYWATCHERS

INDIGENOUS ASTRONOMY REVITALIZATION

Arts Learning - 2015 - Community Engagement

"NATIVE SKYWATCHERS – EARTH SKY CONNECTIONS”

Community art programming that weaves together art, science, and culture, inspiring learners to create art that tells the story of their connection to earth and sky. Participants were not only looking at art, but together we took a deep dive into the meaning of the art to then create new art. This workshop series offered a compelling, relationship-based approach to engaging community and elevating our voices through the art, science, culture.

Twelve workshops of co-creating classes. Led by four native/mixed-race native artists. Eight community partners.

“The art we created seemed philosophical – as though the science of the skies had a connection to how we think and feel about the world. And our art reflects that feeling.”

“When I learn more about Dakota culture, I feel closer to it.”
